The Youth Crisis in Ghana – At a Glance
Ghana’s youth is over 11.78 million, representing over 38.2% of the total population. This age group is a significant portion of Ghana's population, and is projected to increase to over 17.7 million by 2050. A powerful asset, but also a growing risk if left unsupported:
- 12.6% youth unemployment and 14.7% underemployment (World Bank, 2025)
- 1.2 million NEET youth (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) and growing at 5% annually (GSS, 2023)
- 27.2% live below the poverty line, with 30% in Volta Region facing food insecurity (UNICEF, 2022)
- 20% of youth lack basic literacy despite increased SHS access (UNESCO, 2022)
- 18% teenage pregnancy rate; high youth HIV prevalence (WHO, 2023)
- 60% lack access to formal banking; only 25% are financially literate (World Bank, 2023)
- Only 10% of youth participate in civic or local governance (Afrobarometer, 2023)
- 100,000 youth migrate abroad each year, draining rural talent and weakening community structures (GSS, 2023)
